Old boy denies Chester win

Gregg Blundell scored a late penalty to secure Darlington a 1-1 draw at Chester City.

Gregg Blundell scored a late penalty to secure Darlington a 1-1 draw at former club Chester City.

The striker only left Chester in January, but converted an 89th minute spot-kick after Simon Yeo had put the home side in front on 51 minutes.

Darlington, chasing a play-off spot, had a goal disallowed in the first half when Chester keeper John Danby punched the ball into his own net from Martin Smith's corner, but there was adjudged to have been some pushing.

Chester were restricted to shooting from outside the area, with Dean Bennett's effort deflected wide and Jamie Hand also going close.

The breakthrough arrived early in the second half when Yeo rounded Darlington keeper Sam Russell before finishing from an acute angle.

The hosts almost scored a second goal, but Chris Holroyd's acrobatic attempt was kept out by Russell.

But with Chester holding on, Laurence Wilson's clumsy challenge on Blundell was penalised and the ex-Blues forward kept his cool to tuck away the penalty.
