Dragons cling on in fiery clash

Wrexham maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Chester.

Wrexham maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Chester.

Both teams were reduced to ten men in a fiery clash at The Saunders Honda Stadium, before the Welsh side withstood a late fightback from Chester to cling onto the three points.

First to be dismissed was Chester's Ricky Ravenhill for violent conduct after 25 minutes, and it did not take long for The Red Dragons to cash in on their numerical advantage.

Neil Roberts stroked home a penalty three minutes before half time following Stephen Vaughan's foul on Matt Done.

The lead was doubled on 52 minutes when Mark Jones latched onto a Steve Evans pass and lobbed John Danby from the edge of the area.

Wrexham looked to be cruising to victory but the tide turned with 13 minutes remaining when Evans was red carded for a second bookable offence.

Jamie Hand set up a nervy finale with a superb strike from 25 yards (81), but Chester could not force an equaliser.

The result propels Wrexham up to sixth place in League Two, while Chester remain 11th.
