Caldwell ready for Scots call

Gary Caldwell says he is fit and ready should he be named in Scotland's starting XI.

Gary Caldwell says he is fit and ready ahead of Scotland's Euro 2008 qualifying ties with Georgia and Italy after being named in Alex McLeish's squad.

Caldwell is yet to make his first-team comeback for Celtic since picking up a knee injury in November, despite being named on the bench for last weekend's defeat to Rangers.

But, despite his lack of football, Caldwell says he is ready should he be called upon.

"It's up to Alex McLeish, that's his decision," he said.

"Managers pick the team and it's up to me to show that I should be in it.

"I've trained for a long time now. I've done a lot hard work, a lot of running, a lot of leg weights and I am 100% confident that I would be ready."

The 24-year-old has only this week made his comeback from injury in a reserve game for Celtic, and Caldwell recognises that getting back into the starting XI at Celtic Park will not be a straight-forward process.

"I've been training for a good few weeks now and every day I've got to show what I can do and what I can bring to the team," he continued.

"Everyone that has come in has done well and the club has kept picking up points.

"It's difficult to change a winning side so I've got to work even harder than I did at the start of the season to prove myself."

Manager Gordon Strachan has meanwhile admitted that he has contacted Scotland boss McLeish to advise him on Caldwell's fitness.

"I spoke to Alex on Tuesday and said, 'Listen, get him back in'," Strachan revealed.

"He's getting there, he just needs some games, but Alex knows a good player when he sees one."
