Gers to appeal McGregor red

Rangers are to appeal Allan McGregor's red card in the Uefa Cup.

Rangers are to appeal Allan McGregor's red card in their Uefa Cup victory over Hapoel Tel Aviv.

The Gers' 4-0 win over the Israeli side was marred by the goalkeeper's sending off following a clash with Luciano de Bruno.

McGregor is adamant he did not make contact with the Hapoel substitute and club chief executive Martin Bain will put his case forward to Uefa next week.

"We were very disappointed with Allan's ordering off last night. He is adamant he never made any contact with the player and we back him fully," Bain told the club's official website.

"The club will put forward its case to Uefa early next week and we hope to convince the disciplinary body of his innocence.

"Allan's red card spoiled what was a terrific evening for the club. Our fans were magnificent from the first whistle and it's a shame such an occasion was marred by what we consider to be a poor decision."

McGregor is set to miss the first leg of Rangers' last 16 tie against Osasuna early next month.

The 25-year-old's sending off remains a mystery with television pictures failing to capture the incident clearly.

Walter Smith (pictured) has his own view of what happened and while willing to back his keeper, the Rangers boss was unhappy he reacted.

"I'm in the stand and the ball was kicked up the pitch in frustration," Smith said. "I saw their player run after it and kick the ball at Brahim Hemdani and Allan McGregor, who were there.

"I'm not really clear what happened after that but Allan McGregor, himself, says there is no way he touched the player. I have to take his word for that and I do take his word for that.

"I don't think, at that stage of the game, there was any reason for him to react. If Rangers had lost a goal, there may have been that type of reaction."
