Girondins close on Micoud

Bordeaux appear to have won the race for Werder Bremen star Johan Micoud.

Bordeaux appear to have beaten off competition from Paris Saint Germain and clubs in England to the signature of Werder Bremen star Johan Micoud.

The gifted schemer is ready to end his Bundesliga adventure and has had a number of clubs hankering after his services.

Micoud made his name at Bordeaux in the mid to late 1990s and it would appear as if he is ready for a return to Les Girondins.

"It's a good piece of news, though it is not official as nothing has been signed yet," Bordeaux's Brazilian coach Ricardo told L'Equipe on Friday. "On Thursday, there were just some details to be settled.

"Johan has huge experience and that will be important for the start of the season."

Werder Bremen's director of sport Klaus Allofs admits it is with a heavy heart that he is allowing Micoud to move on.

"We are negotiating with Bordeaux and we are on the right track," he declared.

"It is only because he is attached to the club that we allow him to leave.

"He wants to end his career there and then live in the area.

"When you feel a player wants to leave, you can't try to keep him. Moreover Johan achieved beautiful things in our club. For four years, he has been absolutely unquestionable.

"If he would have wanted to leave for a German club or another French club, it would have been much more complex."
