Mavuba's season motivation

French starlet Rio Mavuba can't wait to get his first taste of the UEFA Champions League.

French starlet Rio Mavuba is excited by the challenge of the new season ahead and is looking forward to getting his first taste of UEFA Champions League football.

The Bordeaux midfielder has caught the eye in Ligue 1 over the last few seasons, and has been linked with a big money move to a number of clubs.

But rather than leave the Stade Chaban-Delmas, he has chosen to stay and fight in the French top flight.

Mavuba has been playing at the European Under-21 Championship but is now happy to return to domestic football, and feels Les Girondins can continue to improve, after finishing second in the league last term.

"The group hasn't changed a lot since last year, which is a good thing because we will keep our quality and togetherness," Mavuba told Sud-Ouest.

"Johan Micoud will bring the experience that we were waiting for.

"We have to beat Toulouse next Saturday. I am confident and relaxed.

"I think it is possible to have a great season, like last year. We can finish in the top three and stabilise the club at a high level.

"To focus on Lyon would not be a good idea. Solidarity is the main thing.

"The Champions League will be so exciting. I am waiting for August 24 to know our opponents. After the World Cup, that is the most important competition.

"New players could bring us experience. Our directors take their time to recruit, I think it is clever. But let me say again: our group is skilled.

"I love playing with the Under-21 French team, but I am looking forward to playing again with the stars."

Bordeaux have an early chance to stamp their authority on the league when they entertain Lyon in the third game of the season on August 19.
