Les Verts in European exit

Romanian outfit CFR Cluj have sprung another surprise by knocking out St Etienne.

Romanian outfit CFR Cluj have continued their giant-killing run in the InterToto Cup by knocking out French Ligue 1 outfit Saint-Etienne.

The Romanians knocked out Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in the last round and pulled off another shock after a 2-2 draw on French soil.

That result saw the tie end 3-3 on aggregate with Cluj progressing on away goals.

An eventful encounter at the Stade Geoffrey-Guichard saw both sides end with ten men, but Les Verts were unable to prevail after twice falling behind.

Cluj went ahead from the penalty spot on 24 minutes. Saint-Etienne defender N'kongolo Ilunga was sent off after handling on the line and Ambrozie Coroian confidently despatched the resulting spot-kick.

The home side pulled level six minutes after the break through Julian Sable (pictured) and looked to have seized the initiative when Cluj were also reduced to ten men after Laszlo Balint's assault on former Leeds star Lamine Sakho.

However, the visitors stunned the home fans when Daca Tilinca restored their lead midway through the second period and although Mouamadou Dabo equalised in the dying stages it proved too little too late for Les Verts.
