Swede thinks over future

Monaco midfielder Pontus Farnerud is considering his future at the club.

Monaco midfielder Pontus Farnerud is considering his future with the UEFA Champions League runners-up.

Farnerud spent last season on loan at Strasbourg and may be offered a permanent return to Stade de la Meinau.

The Sweden international only has a year remaining on his Principality contract and is unlikely to play a prominent role this term.

In the past, the 24-year-old has received offers from Celtic, Everton, Portsmouth and Hamburg and is believed to favour a move abroad.

Nice are keen to keep the midfielder in Ligue 1 and a decision on his future is expected shortly.

Meanwhile, Monaco coach Didier Deschamps is refusing to take qualification for this season's Champions League group phase for granted.

Monaco won 3-0 in Slovenia against Novo Gorica in the first leg of their qualifying tie but Deschamps is wary of being over-confident.

"Winning 3-0 away from home for a first qualification match for the Champions League is great but it was not always easy, especially when we were down to ten," said Deschamps.

"I remain cautious. I don't forget that Novo Gorica won 5-0 in the return match in Copenhagen.

"We have to confirm our good performance in a fortnight."
