Sevilla steal in for Fazio

Sevilla beat the deadline to snap up highly-rated Argentine defender Federico Fazio.

Primera high-flyers Sevilla beat the transfer deadline to snap up highly-rated Argentine defender Federico Fazio.

The young defender, 19, is a right-back by trade and moves from Argentine outfit Ferro Carril Oeste, signing a five-year contract.

Although largely unknown in Europe, Fazio is much-admired in his homeland and has just returned from representing his country at the recent South American Under 20 championship in Paraguay.

No figures have been released regarding his transfer to Sevilla, although it is thought he will initially train with the club's youth team as he bids to make the transition to European football.

The teenager was unsurprisingly excited about his switch to the Uefa Cup holders and cannot wait to get started at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

"I am very keen to get to know the players and start to play," he told Sevilla's official website. "Little by little I will adapt and settle in.

"Everything has happened very quickly. In a year and a half I have gone from playing in the Argentine second division, to being in the Argentina Under 20 team and signing for Sevilla, one of the best teams in the world."
