Atletico Madrid's Argentine playmaker Ariel Ibagaza has signed a two-year contract extension.

The 29-year-old joined Atletico from Real Mallorca in 2003 and was used sparingly by previous manager Carlos Bianchi.

Bianchi was sacked in January, and under his replacement Pepe Murcia, Ibagaza has become an integral part of the club's midfield and has been in sparkling form in helping them win seven of their last eight league matches.

Atletico will hope to leapfrog their European rivals Villarreal, when the two meet in the Primera Liga on Sunday.
