Del Piero double saves Juve

JUVENTUS moved a step closer to retaining their Scudetto crown with a narrow 2-1 victory over Brescia, as nearest rivals Internazionale were held to a 1-1 draw by Lazio.

Brescia have little to play for other than pride, but battled bravely and made Juve work for their win.

Stadio Delle Alpi talisman Alessandro Del Piero came to the fore, netting a free-kick with the aid of a deflection.

Juve were made to sweat when Stephan Appiah hauled Brescia level ten minutes from time, but Del Piero popped up with his second of the game, an exquisite volley, shortly afterwards to secure the three points for the Turin titans.

At the Giuseppe Meazza, Hernan Crespo stooped to head home an Alvaro Recoba free-kick.

The goal revived Inter`s hopes of claiming the title, but Lazio improved markedly after the break and their efforts were rewarded when Simone Inzaghi headed home a leveller for the Roman club.

Piacenza kept their slender hopes of avoiding the drop alive, with a crushing 5-1 win over Perugia.

The home side started the game in positive fashion, and took an early lead through Eusebio Di Francesco. Hugo Antonio Campagnaro doubled the advantage on 36 minutes, and Dario Hubner effectively killed off Perugia with a third shortly before the break.

Jose Ze Maria got a goal back for Perugia on 48 minutes, but Campagnaro netted his second on the hour mark for Piacenza. Claudio Ferrarese added a fifth as Piacenza ran riot.

Reggina moved out of the relegation places, at the expense of Atalanta, after securing a point from their home game with Parma.

Como remain deep in trouble after being held to a 0-0 draw by Modena.

Chievo`s chase for a European place stuttered again, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Bologna.

Giuseppe Signori`s second-minute goal fired the home side in front, but Ivano Della Morte scored an injury-time leveller for The Flying Donkeys.

Udinese were pegged back at Empoli, with Antonio Di Natale`s late goal cancelling out Giampiero Pinzi`s opener.
