Porto hit-man in demand

Roma and Hamburg are reportedly leading the chase for Porto striker Hugo Almeida.

Roma and Hamburg are reportedly leading the chase for Porto striker Hugo Almeida.

The hit-man has enjoyed an impressive season and caught the eye as Porto clinched the Portuguese title.

Although he managed only four goals in 27 appearances, he performed impressively for the team and became a key member of Co Adriaanse's squad.

Hamburg attempted to take Almeida on loan in January but saw that request rebuffed by the Dutch coach.

They have now returned to try and prise the former Portugal Under-21 star away on a permanent basis but will face competition from Roma.

Almeida is under contract until 2010 at Estadio do Dragao and Porto will look for at least ‚é¼6 million (£4 million) if they are to be persuaded to sell.

However, they insist they have yet to field any concrete offers.

"Until now we have not received any offers for the player," stated a Porto director.
