Stankovic saga rumbles on

THE contract saga surrounding Dejan Stankovic is still no nearer being resolved as he has still not agreed on a new deal with Lazio.

The Serbia & Montenegro international has been stalling on an extension on his Lazio deal for some time, but is no closer to resolving his future as yet.

There are continuing meetings between his agent Vinicio Fioranelli and Lazio officials but they have yet to agree terms.

"It's a difficult negotiation," admitted Lazio president Ugo Longo.

"Stankovic, due to his contract situation, is being chased by many clubs, but we have the will to keep him and he wants to stay too.

"I'm confident that everything will be solved.

"What I wish is that the situation could be solved soon. But there are economic problems that have to be respected."

The main sticking point seems to be the financial aspect of the contract, although it is not known whether Stankovic wants a salary that Lazio cannot afford, or whether it is a problem with unpaid wages.

Lazio boss Roberto Mancini is eager for Stankovic to commit his future to the Roman side as he believes it will affect his performances.

A number of clubs are after Stankovic but Lazio are ready to fight to keep him at Staido Olimpico, although they may have to stump up the cash to keep hold of him.
