Serie A round-up

Luca Toni saw Fiorentina to a 4-1 win on Saturday, while Ascoli provided late drama.

A hat-trick from Luca Toni saw Fiorentina to a 4-1 win on Saturday, while Ascoli struck late to deny Messina their first win of the season.

The Viola opened the scoring after just two minutes when Toni (pictured) rose above his marker to head home from a Martin Jorgensen cross.

The Azzuri marksman bagged his second after 24 minutes when he latched on to a misjudged backpass from Fernando Couto before rounding keeper Luca Bucci and rolling the ball into an empty net.

Stefano Fiore got in on the action after 37 minutes, sending a left-footed rocket screaming into the back of the net against his former employers.

Mark Bresciano threatened on a number of occasions for the visitors but Toni put the game well and truly beyond reach when he completed his hat-trick on the hour.

Fiore's through ball found Parma's offside trap wanting, allowing the former Palermo striker to take full advantage of Bucci's hesitation, deftly looping his shot over the stranded keeper.

Vincenzo Grella's deflected shot provided some consolation for the Gialloblu but it was to no avail as the Viola ran out comfortable winners.

Earlier, ten-man Ascoli denied Messina their first three points of the season with an injury time equaliser at the Stadio San Filippo.

After 28 minutes, Ivica Ilie went sprawling to the ground inside the Ascoli area following what seemed to be light contact with Maurizio Domizzi. Riccardo Zampagna converted from the spot and celebrated by showing off a tattoo of his daughter's name, inked in Japanese script.

The solitary goal looked like it would be enough to secure the points until, deep into injury time, Ascoli's unrelenting pressure finally paid off.

Cristiano Del Grosso drifted a free-kick into the Messina box where Gianluca Comotto rose unchallenged to nod home from the edge of the six yard box.
