MARCO ON THE MARK FOR PERUGIA

PERUGIA shaded the Serie A encounter with Verona on Saturday afternoon, courtesy of a narrow 1-0 victory, while Juventus suffered only their second defeat of the season at the hands of Atalanta.

A second half effort from Marco Materazzi was enough to condemn the visitors to defeat, and leave them looking nervously over their shoulders towards the relegation zone.

Former Everton defender Materazzi pledged his future to Perugia last week, despite firm interest from other clubs, although he looks set to join Internazionale in the summer. Juventus threw away a second-half lead to lose 2-1 at Atalanta on Saturday and missed out on the chance to draw level with Roma at the top of Serie A.

Juventus took the lead in the 73rd minute thynaks to an own-goal from defender Massimo Paganin, who headed a Zinedine Zidane shot into his own net.

Just two minutes later 20-year-old defender Stefano Lorenzi, who had come on as a substitute, headed home his first Serie A goal to level the scores.

Just nine minutes from full time Juventus let former Inter Milan striker Nicola Ventola slip through the offside trap and he calmly keeper Edwin van der Sar to give Atalanta the three points.
