Hamburg capture Starke

By Chris Ives
Hamburg have signed Bayer Leverkusen reserve goalkeeper Tom Starke on loan until the end of the season.

Starke has failed to establish himself at Bayer and they are willing to let him go out on loan to gain valuable first team football.

Hamburg coach Klaus Toppmoller, who knows all about the 22-year-old custodian's abilities from their time together at the BayArena, has been keen to sign a reliable back-up to the Rothosen's current number one Stefan Wachter.

With first choice keeper Martin Pieckenhagen still on the long-term injury list, Toppmoller sees Starke as an important addition to his squad as he attempts to lead his team towards a Uefa Cup berth after a recent run of superb form.
