Keeper pens new Hamburg deal

Martin Pieckenhagen has signed a new deal to stay at Hamburg until 2007.

Hamburg goalkeeper Martin Pieckenhagen has signed a new deal with the Rothosen and committed himself to the AOL-Arena until 2007.

HSV boss Thomas Doll is happy about the decision of the veteran keeper, who joined the port city club from Bundesliga rivals Hansa Rostock in 2001.

"Martin is one of our leading players and it's good news that he will stay with us for the next years," declared Doll.

Pieckenhagen had lost his first-team status last season after being sidelined for more than six months with cruciate ligaments, but the 33-year-old has successfully regained his place and is currently Hamburg's undisputed number one shot stopper.

"I am very happy that everything is settled before the second part of the season starts," he stated.

"I have high aims and I believe that we are on the right track."

Hamburg have overcome a disastrous start and are now only three points behind the Uefa Cup ranks.
