Duo to miss Republic clash

LEE CARSLEY and Steven Reid have been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland's friendly international with Australia on Wednesday.

The midfield duo are both unavailable due to injury and will be forced to sit out the clash at Landsdowne Road.

Everton star Carsley has a knee ligament injury which forced him out of The Toffees 2-1 defeat at Arsenal on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Reid has sustained an ankle problem which also forced him out of the season's opener, Blackburn 's 5-1 demolition of Wolves.

Republic boss Brian Kerr is unlikely to call up replacements for the pair, and admitted Australia should provide a stern test for his team.

"Australia are making progress in international football as their 3-1 victory over England at Upton Park last February proved," Kerr declared.

"The important thing is that we pick up where we left off against Albania and Georgia at the end of the season and keep the momentum going for the Russian match."
