Lahm: Fans were 12th man

Philipp Lahm felt the reaction to Germany's opening day win against Costa Rica was euphoric.

The Allianz Arena crowd showed their appreciation for a rousing first match as Lahm's strike set Germany on their way to a 4-2 victory against Los Ticos.

Despite the defensive frailties of the home side, and some of the negativity surrounding their build-up to the tournament, the home nation did enough to get the supporters firmly on their side.

"It is always important to start off with a win," Lahm said afterwards. "You could see what euphoria there was in the stadium.

"Part of the victory should be credited to the fans.

"They were the 12th man on the pitch.

"We scored four goals and that's important but clearly we can't let so many goals in.

"We weren't 100 percent perfect but it was a good show for the opening match."
