Barnsley v Cardiff preview

Cardiff will look to close the gap on Championship leaders QPR when they travel to Barnsley.

Duo ready for Tykes return; Bellamy set to miss out again

Barnsley are chasing their first win in four league matches when they take on promotion candidates Cardiff at Oakwell. The Tykes are currently unbeaten at home but lie 13th in the Championship table and Mark Robins' side were held to a goalless midweek draw at Scunthorpe. Meanwhile, Dave Jones cut a frustrated figure as Cardiff missed the chance to cut the gap between themselves and leaders QPR following their midweek stalemate at home to Crystal Palace. The Bluebirds will be hoping to get themselves back on track with a much needed win.

Tykes team news

Jay McEveley and Garry O'Connor could both return to the Barnsley squad. McEveley, called up to the Scotland squad earlier this week missed the midweek draw at Scunthorpe due to a bruised foot and striker O'Connor, on loan from Birmingham, was sidelined despite having an injection to aid his recovery from a groin strain. Defender Bobby Hassell is expected to shake off a knock that forced him off at Scunthorpe but if he fails to make it Keiran Trippier could step in. Goran Lovre, Jacob Butterfield, Luke Potter and Andy Gray all returned to the starting line-up in midweek and manager Robins must decide whether to stick with them or recall recent loan signing Chris Wood and midfielder Hugo Colace.
Bluebirds team news
Wales international Craig Bellamy is unlikely to feature for Cardiff. The on-loan striker managed just two appearances upon his return to his hometown club in late August before encountering more troublesome knee problems while on international duty with Wales and has not played since. Despite being close to a return, Bellamy has already been omitted from Wales' squad for their forthcoming internationals against Bulgaria and Switzerland. Jones stated earlier in the week that he will assess Bellamy's fitness with a view to the Barnsley clash, but he is almost certain not to risk him at Oakwell bearing in mind City's next game is two weeks away. Danny Drinkwater (thigh) and Michael Chopra (ankle) are also both targeting the October 16 derby against Bristol City for their respective comebacks. Midfielder Seyi Olofinjana made his return in Tuesday's goalless draw against Crystal Palace, while Jones will check on the availability of Stephen McPhail after he missed the stalemate with a back strain.
