Dundee Utd 0-1 Hibernian: Jason Cummings scores and sent off at Tannadice

Hibernian extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Championship to nine points after a 1-0 win over Dundee United in a fiery encounter at Tannadice.

Jason Cummings scored the only goal of the game after 39 minutes before being dismissed for a second bookable offence 15 minutes from time.

The hosts also had a man sent off, with Lewis Toshney collecting two bookings on a frustrating night for Ray McKinnon's side.

Right-back Toshney earned a yellow card for a foul on Andrew Shinnie and was back in the dressing room just after the half-hour when he was cautioned for a second time for a crude challenge on the same player.

Hibs made the most of the extra man, with Cummings finishing in style after springing the offside trap and latching onto Shinnie's ball forward.

Cummings continued to be heavily involved in the action and could have been awarded a penalty after William Edjenguele appeared to bring him down in the area.

Cummings' night was to end in frustration, however, as the striker was shown a second yellow card after punching the ball into the net before claiming a second goal.

Martin Boyle then spurned the opportunity to put the result beyond doubt when he volleyed over from six yards.

But it made little difference, as Neil Lennon's side recovered from their shock 2-0 defeat to St Mirren in midweek.
