Aldershot moved into the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy thanks to penalties at Exeter, the tie having finished 0-0.

Shots skipper Ben Herd emerged as the hero as he smashed the winning penalty into the bottom corner, Grecians youngster Jordan Moore-Taylor and the experienced Steve Tully had seen their spot-kicks saved by goalkeeper Glenn Morris. The first half was a bit of a non-event with few chances. Aldershot perhaps had the best of those with Craig Reid forcing Artur Krysiak into a smart stop with his feet and Jordan Roberts smashing a shot goalwards which was deflected wide. Exeter did have the ball in the net but Scot Bennett's goal was disallowed for a foul on Troy Brown. The second half followed a similar pattern although Exeter had the better of it. Liam Sercombe saw a fierce drive well saved before substitute Jimmy Keohane nodded a great chance over the bar from close range. Sonny Bradley headed Aldershot's best chance straight at Krysiak in the closing stages, and in the end it was penalty kicks which settled the tie.
