      McDonald fires winner for Celtic

Celtic closed the gap on Rangers with a narrow 1-0 win over Falkirk. Scott McDonald scored the all-important winning goal right on the stroke of half-time to sink brave Falkirk. The Australian striker popped up in first half stoppage time to flick home Shunsuke Nakamura's cross from close-range. The result was harsh on Falkirk who dominated for large periods of the game. Falkirk should really have broken the deadlock on 34 minutes when Dean Holden played Graham Barrett in on goal, but the Irishman was denied by a fine save from Artur Boruc. The home side suffered a major blow when Holden had to be carried off on a stretcher after being injured in a collision with Stephen McManus in playing the ball through to Barrett. Holden was taken straight to hospital and amid fears he had broken his leg. Celtic broke the deadlock in the third minute of first half injury-time when Nakamura sent over a cross from right and McDonald got ahead of Robert Olejnik to head the ball home. Falkirk continued to dominate in the second half, but they struggled to create any clear goalscoring opportunities as Celtic denied them too many sights on goal. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink went close to adding a second goal in the closing stages when he saw his shot come off the post, but it did not matter as they held on to take the three points and close the gap on Rangers to four points.
