Pools sink 10-man Cumbrians

Hartlepool coasted to their biggest win of the season as they swept 10-man Carlisle aside 4-0 at Victoria Park.

Teenage striker Luke James was the hero, scoring twice as he caused problems all afternoon with his pace and energy. The 17-year-old opened the scoring in the sixth minute, taking an Andy Monkhouse cross, his shot was deflected past his own goalkeeper by Lubo Michalik. Pools doubled their lead 11 minutes later, with Neil Austin crossing and Antony Sweeney climbing high in the penalty area to head in his second goal in a week. Carlisle striker Lee Miller was sent-off for his lunge on Monkhouse in the 26th minute, although the instant red card from referee Rob Madeley appeared harsh. The Cumbrians switched formation at the break and pressed forward, but only a free-kick from Jon- Paul McGovern threatened and James finished them off in the 67th minute, chasing down goalkeeper Adam Collin to block his clearance, picking up the loose ball on the touchline and racing into the area to smash in his third career goal in only his fifth start. James was denied a hat-trick by Collin's block, but Pools were not finished and substitute Colin Nish, on his return from injury, slid home a low finish from 12 yards in the 81st minute.
