Substitute Gnakpa seals Wembley thriller

Substitute Claude Gnakpa secured Johnstone's Paint Trophy glory for Luton after a pulsating final against Scunthorpe was settled in extra-time at Wembley. French midfielder Gnakpa lobbed home in the 95th minute to secure silverware for Mick Harford's battling League Two side. The Hatters are facing relegation from the Football League after their 30-point deduction at the start of the season but managed to put their troubles aside on a memorable afternoon for the club. League One club Scunthorpe took the lead in the 14th minute when a long clearance from goalkeeper Joe Murphy was flicked on by Paul Hayes and the prolific Gary Hooper burst through to drill home his 30th of the season from the edge of the box. But Harford's men hit back with a goal of real quality as the ball was sprayed out to Craddock on the left and he found the on-rushing Chris Martin who chested the ball down and slid it under Murphy.

Exquisite

Former Middlesbrough youngster Craddock was perhaps fortunate to stay on the field as he raised his hands to Scunthorpe skipper Cliff Byrne, but the clash was missed by referee Phil Crossley and his assistants. Craddock then looked as though he would be the match-winner when he put the finishing touch to another impressive Hatters move, chesting the ball down on the edge of the area before firing home in the 70th minute. But with less than two minutes on the clock, Grant McCann swept home an exquisite left-foot shot from outside the box which gave Dean Brill no chance as it flew over his head and into the far top corner of the net. Luton regained their lead in the first period of extra-time as Keith Kean's long ball over the top was lifted home by Gnakpa under pressure from defender Marcus Williams to spark scenes of jubilation among the visiting fans. Henri Lansbury, who hit the bar during 90 minutes, drilled another shot behind Brill and across the face of goal from a tight angle in the second period of added time as the Iron attempted to hit back. Scunthorpe, who had already used all their substitutes, were forced to play the final five minutes with only 10 men after David Mirfin was carried off as Luton held on for glory.
