Stoke worthy winners against Southampton, says Mark Hughes

Mark Hughes thinks his side were well worthy of the three points as Stoke beat Southampton at St Mary's.

Bojan's delightful flick with the outside of his boot after 10 minutes sealed the points for the Potters, who have now won five of their last seven matches.

Despite the home side enjoying more of the possession, Stoke had the better chances, with Marko Arnautovic, Xherdan Shaqiri and Ibrahim Afellay unable to convert a string of opportunities.

"I thought we deserved it today, in terms of clear cut chances created, in open play, general play," Hughes said.

"We had four or five really good opportunities, we should have converted more of them because towards the end of the game you are only 1-0 to the good and you know you are going to come under a little bit of pressure.

"Obviously on the break we've got a real threat and good quality and we had really good opportunities. We should have taken the game away from them sooner than we did.

"We've won it with a fantastic goal by Bojan, he has that ability to drift into those positions in the box and it was a difficult finish but he has that ability so it was a great way to win the game."

Mark Hughes says his Stoke side were 'very well-organised' and deserved to win in their 1-0 win over Southampton

The 1-0 win marked Stoke's fifth consecutive clean sheet away from home and Hughes praised his "well-organised" side for refusing to let Southampton get into their stride.

"You have to be rock solid and defensively sound, that gives you a platform to build a performance and build results in the Premier League and that's what we seem to have at the moment so we need to maintain it," Hughes added.

"I don't think Jack Butland has really had a save of note to make today so that shows how well we defended against a very good Southampton side, who, on the day, couldn't get anything going because we were very well organised and understood what we were trying to do."

Hughes also dismissed Ronald Koeman's claims that his side could have had a second-half penalty for an apparent foul by Philipp Wollscheid on Graziano Pelle.

"I thought Philipp had eyes on the ball; I don't think he was aware of Pelle," Hughes said. "I think he was on his way down before Phillip made contact with him so there was a little bit of that going on towards the end.

"I think they were a little bit desperate towards the end, to be honest, and you understand that is part of the game Pelle will try to use. Thankfully the referee, who I thought was excellent today, didn't buy it and made the right decision."
