Hull's Mohamed Diame is undergoing the second part of his medical at Newcastle after failing to agree a new deal with the Tigers.

Diame is poised to drop down a division to the Championship after Newcastle agreed to meet the £4.5m release clause in the Senegalese midfielder's contract.

Hull had hoped to keep hold of Diame, who scored the winning goal in last season's Championship play-off final against Sheffield Wednesday.

However, the 29-year-old now looks set to follow former boss Steve Bruce out of the KCOM Stadium in what is another major pre-season blow for the Yorkshire club.

Diame expressed his disappointment at the departure of Bruce, who left the club last month reportedly over concerns about the lack of investment in new players this summer.

"To be honest, I'm very sad," Diame said at the time of Bruce's departure. "I spent the last two years with him and he was an important manager for me here.

"I'm sad to see him go but this is football - we're all going to leave but the club stays here. We started pre-season in a difficult situation - we have a lot of injuries too. I think we need some players."

Hull have signed just two players since they secured promotion to the Premier League and now face a race against time to replace Diame, who scored 10 goals in 41 league games last season.

Diame is set to join Newcastle as a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, after the Dutchman moved to Liverpool last week in a £25m deal.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has wasted no time in assembling a new-look squad as he attempts to guide the Magpies back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

The former Real Madrid and Liverpool manager has already signed seven players including Dwight Gayle from Crystal Palace and Matt Ritchie from Bournemouth.

Diame could now join Newcastle in time for the Magpies' Championship opener against Fulham on Friday.
