Wigan have signed former England U21 international Luke Garbutt on loan from Everton.

The 23-year-old full-back joins the Latics on loan until January 2 after finding his first-team opportunities limited at Goodison Park.

Garbutt made five senior appearances for the Toffees last season after breaking into the first team following injuries to fellow left-backs Leighton Baines, Bryan Oviedo and Brendan Galloway.

However, he has now been allowed to join Wigan, who are desperate for defensive cover following injuries to Reece James and Andy Kellett.

Latics manager Gary Caldwell welcomed the signing of Garbutt, who already has experience of playing in the Championship with Fulham last season.

"We've been hit with injuries to Reece James and Andy Kellett and it was clear we needed someone in," said Caldwell, in a statement on Wigan's website.

"Luke is a tremendous young player with a big future in the game and we are delighted to have reached an agreement to bring him here.

"He knows the division well having spent last season on loan with Fulham and he adds excellent competition to the squad.

"He has great energy, and is a dynamic defender who is comfortable as a wing back or as part of a flat back four."

Garbutt was not included in Caldwell's squad for Tuesday evening's Championship match against Birmingham.

The defender is likely to make his league debut for Wigan away at Nottingham Forest on August 20.
