Sunderland have agreed a £7m fee for Sevilla midfielder Vicente Iborra, Sky sources understand.
New manager David Moyes, who has been urging the club to make new signings, confirmed last week that a bid had been made for the 28-year-old.
Iborra has been part of Sevilla's three successive Europa League triumphs and came on as a late substitute against Liverpool in the 2016 final in Basel.
He made 47 in total appearances last term, scoring nine goals, including the winner against Barcelona last October.
Sevilla chairman Jose Castro also confirmed last Wednesday they had received a bid for Iborra but did not name the club.
He said: "We have an important offer for Iborra. In this moment it isn't clear if we will accept it and we will wait to see what happens in next few days."
Sunderland have since had that bid accepted by the La Liga club, while they also signed Spanish full-back Javier Manquillo, formerly of Liverpool, on Thursday.
Manquillo became the club's sixth signing of the summer following deals for defenders Papy Djilobodji, Donald Love and Paddy McNair, as well as Steven Pienaar and the loan signing of Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj.
