Schalke have confirmed they have parted company with Gerald Asamoah with immediate effect.

Veteran striker will decide whether to retire or look for new club

Schalke general manager Horst Heldt has confirmed the club and former Germany international striker Gerald Asamoah have parted company with immediate effect. The 32-year-old was due to remain as a player at the Bundesliga club until next summer and a deal was in place for him to then spend four years as part of the off-field staff. But both contracts have been cancelled and Asamoah will now decide whether he is going to retire or look for a new club. Heldt told kicker-Sportmagazin: "Gerald told us he has no clue just yet whether he will keep on playing football or hang up his boots. "He said he doesn't know how he will go on. We still agreed on making a cut now. "Although the contracts are now cancelled, this will not rule out Gerald Asamoah and Schalke working together in the future." Apart from last season on loan at St Pauli, Asamoah was a Schalke player since a move from Hannover in 1999. In his years at Veltins-Arena he scored 44 goals in 279 Bundesliga matches.
