Keeper on brink of returning to boyhood club

Goalkeeper Piet Velthuizen is poised to return to Vitesse after parting ways with Hercules. The 24-year-old's contract with the Spanish side was dissolved at the end of last season following their relegation from the Primera Liga. He had struggled to make an impact in Spain, notching up just three appearances for the Herculanos after joining from boyhood club Vitesse last summer. Dutchman Velthuizen is now set to re-sign in Arnhem on a one-year deal, subject to a medical, as he looks to get his career back on track.

Choice

"Two weeks ago I had nothing," Velthuizen told Voetbal International. "Now I could choose from four clubs. "But Sprint (Vitesse) is my old nest and they have a coach that really appeals to me. I thank God that I can back up and make this step." Velthuizen made his senior debut for Vitesse back in 2006 and amassed 108 Eredivisie appearances during his first spell with the club. The shot-stopper has been capped once for the Netherlands national side, in 2009.
