Defender commits to Ligue 1 giants until the summer of 2014

Souleymane Diawara has penned a new deal at Marseille that will keep him at Stade Velodrome until the summer of 2014. The Senegal international has agreed a 12-month extension to his previous contract. The 32-year-old has spent the last two years with Marseille and helped them to secure a league and cup double during his debut campaign. He is delighted to have agreed fresh terms and has hinted that he could see out his playing days with his current employers. "I'm very happy to be able to continue this adventure with OM," said Diawara.

Confidence

"I want to thank the directors and coach for their confidence. "I still want to win titles with OM. I'm here for two-and-a-half more years and I can see myself finishing my career here." Marseille coach Didier Deschamps is delighted to see Diawara commit his future to the club and claims there was never any chance of the centre-half being offloaded. "If we weren't happy with him, he wouldn't have extended his contract," he said. "We know what he's done for the club and he's someone important, even though he's had periods when he's played less well."
