Mowbray keen to bring in competition for first-choice Steele

Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray has taken Basel goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler on trial as he looks to bring in a No.2 to Jason Steele. Mowbray is currently without a senior keeper at the training ground, with Steele on Team GB duty, Connor Ripley with England's Under 19 squad and Danny Coyne having being released. Leutwiler has started training with Boro and the 23-year-old could be one of several keepers trying to impress Mowbray during the coming weeks. "The goalkeeping scenario is one where we're probably going to use the pre-season games to have a look at a few people," Mowbray told the club's official website. "We've got plenty of games and there are lots of goalkeepers out of contract and dozens of agents keep texting me. "I'm comfortable with Jason as our No.1 goalkeeper, but he does need competition. "We're not going to pay a second-choice goalkeeper a huge salary to come and sit on the bench. So it's a fine balance of somebody who understands the role he'll have at the club, but also understands that when he gets an opportunity, if he grabs it, he can stay in and make Jason work very hard to get back."
