Herd has not played for Villa since the New Year's Day draw at Swansea after fracturing his foot in training.
And the 23-year-old utility man is now resigned to going under the knife to correct the problem, meaning he will be unable to take part in Villa's fight for Premier League survival.
"It's pretty disappointing," said Herd. "I was looking forward to playing a part in trying to help us stay in the Premier League and also hoping that I might have been called into the Australia squad to face Oman.
"It's pretty gutting, but these things happen in football and you have to just get on with it, stay positive and work on getting back to fitness."
Herd has revealed he suffered a fresh setback on the eve of Villa's home defeat to Manchester City last week.
"I was really hoping to be involved against Manchester City the other week but the foot just got sore again and it's a blow which I will just have to deal with," Herd added.
"I'd love to be out there trying to do my bit for the club, but the boys are showing great fight and have given themselves a huge chance of staying up."
