Tottenham winger Townsend was a surprise starter in Roy Hodgson's side as England edged closer to World Cup qualification with an impressive victory at Wembley.
Townsend marked his debut with a stunning goal and also created the opener for Wayne Rooney to help earn him the man-of-the-match award.
Jagielka insists Townsend deserved all the plaudits that came his way after his thrilling debut.
"The type of player he is, the type of character he is I think he took it all in his stride," Jagielka told Sky Sports News.
"He definitely deserved his man-of-the-match performance, first half he was the main goal threat, attacking threat down the right and when he winds up his right foot like that it was a fantastic finish from him."
Chelsea defender Gary Cahill admitted Townsend's positive attacking approach proved the difference England.
"I thought he was brilliant, just how positive he was when he got the ball the first thing he thought was to get at the full-back and he gave him a horrible night.
"He took his goal well and created one so I thought he was the difference."
