Brighton midfielder Andrew Crofts is likely to miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.

The Wales international was hurt in last Saturday's draw with Watford and scans have since discovered a partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament.

Crofts also tore his meniscus and has already had surgery - the Sky Bet Championship club said on their website they do not expect him back before the 2015-16 season.

Manager Sami Hyypia said: "We are all devastated for Crofty. He is an important member of our squad and worked incredibly hard to get back to full fitness after last season's knee injury.

“Crofty is a very strong character and he will continue to receive the best possible care and treatment from our medical staff throughout his rehabilitation.

"In the meantime, everyone at the club wishes Crofty well for a full and speedy recovery."

Crofts was sent off in Brighton's first game of the season at home to Sheffield Wednesday but he had been a regular starter in Hyypia's midfield since returning from suspension.
