Sheffield United completed a 5-1 rout of Notts County in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy second round on Tuesday evening, in a match that included three penalties and a red card.

Jose Baxter netted two of the hosts' three penalties at Bramall Lane, with Matt Done making it 2-0 three minutes after Baxter's first, but he missed out on his hat-trick after he was substituted just before the Blades were awarded their third, which was duly converted by Che Adams.

Stefan Scougall also got himself on the scoresheet in the 67th minute, with County denying United a clean sheet through a goal from former Blade Jon Stead. Magpies defender Haydn Hollis was sent off 17 minutes from time to seal an eventuful encounter.

All the action from Tuesday's matches in the Northern Section of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Crewe Alexandra twice threw away the lead as they lost 3-2 at home to Wigan Athletic. Marcus Haber opened the scoring for the Railwaymen after just six minutes, but his strike was matched by Jordy Hiwula's. 

The Latics man also netted the second equaliser after Ryan Colclough had given the home side a 2-1 lead in the 36th minute, before Yanic Wildschut's strike ultimately sent Wigan through to the third round.

There were two local derbies in Tuesday night's fixture list, with Oxford v Swindon witnessing crowd disturbances before the game.

Meanwhile, there was trouble on the pitch for the Robins after Jordan Turnbull's 32nd-minute red card, and the U's went on to register a 2-0 victory over their League One opponents, with both goals coming from Kemar Roofe.

Down in the South-West section, Plymouth Argyle also picked up a 2-0 win over their local rivals Exeter City, with Craig Tanner assisting one and scoring the other. 

He set up team-mate Hiram Boateng for the first goal just after the half-hour mark at Home Park before adding his name to the scoresheet four minutes after the restart to give Argyle the win, following a delay for floodlight failure. 

Millwall also won 2-0, but had to wait until the 70th minute to make their move against Northampton Town at The Den with two goals in four minutes from Aiden O'Brien, who also got a goal and assist, and Lee Gregory seeing the Lions into Saturday's third-round draw. 

Bristol Rovers and York City also came out as 2-0 victors in their respective home games against Wycombe Wanderers and Doncaster Rovers.

The Pirates pounced early on, with Matt Taylor and Jermaine Easter scoring the only goals inside 12 minutes, while a Vadaine Oliver double gave the Minstermen the win.

There was just one penalty shootout in Tuesday evening's fixtures, with Yeovil Town v Coventry City ending goalless after 90 minutes before the Glovers won 4-3 on spot kicks at Huish Park.

There was also some late drama at the Highbury Stadium where Fleetwood Town, who had lost their previous four league games, scored a 91st-minute goal to win 2-1 against Shrewsbury Town.

The visitors went into the break as 1-0 leaders after Junior Brown's 25th-minute strike, before second-half goals from Ashley Hunter and Bobby Grant in injury time saw the Cod Army through to the next round.

Rochdale, Blackpool and Gillingham also picked up 2-1 wins in their ties against Chesterfield, Port Vale and Luton Town respectively. 

At Spotland, Ashley Eastham's own goal bought the Spireites level before his team-mate Lewis Alessandra saved his blushes just after the restart to put the hosts back in front and ultimately into the third round.

Blackpool went into the break at Vale Park 1-0 ahead and managed to get themselves the win after a Vale equaliser, while the Gills came from behind to knock out the Hatters at Priestfield.

Morecambe and Southend United both picked up wins and clean sheets, with the latter easily seeing off Crawley Town 3-0 at the Checkatrade.com Stadium.

Charlton loanee Joe Pigott scored twice after Myles Weston's opener as three-times runners-up Southend secured their place in the next round. 

Morecambe left it late to book their place in the third round with Shaun Miller scoring in the 81st minute to give his side a 1-0 victory over Bury at Gigg Lane. 

The draw for the area quarter-finals will take place on Soccer AM this Saturday (October 10), live on Sky Sports 1, with fixtures to be played w/c November 9.
