Jamie Carragher goes head-to-head Gary Neville on Monday night but it won’t be in the Sky Studios – both men are nominated for Pundit of the Year at the Football Supporters' Federation Awards.

Carragher and newly-appointed Valencia manager Neville are in the running for the award - to be presented at London's Renaissance Hotel on Monday night - alongside Paul Scholes, Ian Wright, Danny Murphy and Pat Nevin.

Champions League winner Carragher joined Sky as a pundit in 2013 after bringing the curtain down on his 17-year playing career with Liverpool, during which time he won 11 trophies with The Reds.

Former team-mates including Dirk Kuyt have previously described Carragher as a "football nut" and the former England defender admits his passion for the game has helped make the transition from centre-back to centre stage more straightforward.

"It helps that you have a good interest in the game and I always had that when I was a player," Carragher told Sky Sports at the recent Sportswomen of the Year Awards held at Sky Studios.

"I watched a lot of football and read a lot about the game and I still do which certainly helps. I think also some people take to it and some don't, some enjoy it others don't.

"It's nice [to be nominated]. I am fortunate Sky have given me this opportunity. I thoroughly enjoy doing my job and I just hope the viewers are happy and Sky are happy."

Carragher built a reputation as a player who gave his all in training and on the pitch and the 37-year-old says he has taken the same work ethic into his new career away from the field.

"Everyone is different as a player. I was a player that had to work hard otherwise I would never have got to the level I did," he said.

"I didn't have as much natural ability as others, so I've had that work ethic as a player and I think I have taken that into not just what I do for Sky, but also other walks of life.

"But everybody is different. Just because you work fantastically well it doesn't mean you will be great at it. Some people naturally take to it but I like to put the work in and hopefully you can see that on TV."
