Radamel Falcao, Juan Iturbe, Oumar Niasse: Premier League transfers that did not deliver

Falcao, Niasse, Iturbe

With the Premier League season now finished, clubs will turn their attentions to the transfer market and strengthening for the next campaign.

There were plenty of standout signings in 2015/16, most notably Dimitri Payet, N'Golo Kante and Anthony Martial.

But who were the players who did not live up to expectations? We take a look at six who failed to deliver this season…

Juan Iturbe (Bournemouth)

After bringing in Tyrone Mings, Max Gradel and Glenn Murray last summer, Bournemouth were busy again in January with the signings of Benik Afobe, Lewis Grabban and Juan Iturbe.

While Afobe was signed for around £10m, it was the move for Iturbe that demonstrated the growing pulling power of the Premier League.

Once labelled the 'new Messi', he had cost Roma €22m (£17.2m) in 2014 and there were reports that Bournemouth would pay £16.2m if they wanted to turn his loan into a permanent deal.

That seems unlikely given he did not start once in the league, making just two substitute appearances and then a couple of appearances in the cups.

What they said: "It's a new experience for the club to have someone come in as a high-profile transfer. It's exciting to be able to integrate Juan into the squad. He's a talented boy, hopefully he can do very well for us." - Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe.

Oumar Niasse (Everton)

Signed by Everton for £13.5m in January, Roberto Martinez had said that it would be a "bonus" if Niasse was playing games before next season.

But he added: "He was voted the best footballer in the Russian League and is a player who can be very important for us."

Niasse would start two games before the end of the season but was not included in the squad on the final day.

Given the change of management at Goodison Park this summer, the jury is still out on the Senegal forward.

What they said: "It's a great day for me, a big dream to play in the Premier League and a big dream to play for Everton. I know Everton is one of the big clubs here in England with history, the fans and the great players, so I'm very excited and happy to be here." - Oumar Niasse.

Adama Traore (Aston Villa)

Among the many signings made by Aston Villa last summer, it was the addition of Traore that was perhaps the most surprising.

The 20-year-old had played four times for Barcelona's senior side and joined Villa for a fee reported to be around £7m.

"It's exciting for the club. To sign a player from Barcelona just shows the club is moving forward," said another of Villa's new signings, Scott Sinclair.

Unfortunately for Villa, Traore did not start a single league game throughout the season, playing just 184 minutes from the bench. While his progress was hampered by two injuries and he did show signs of promise, Villa have a decision to make on his future as it is reported his wages will increase by £20,000 next season, despite relegation.

What they said: "He's dynamic, very quick and a maverick-type player - you never know what he's going to do next and I mean that as a compliment. He's a huge asset for this club. He can hurt the opposition and I'm delighted to bring him here." - Former Villa boss Tim Sherwood

Henri Saivet and Seydou Doumbia (Newcastle)

Newcastle were the biggest spenders in January as they looked to enhance their chances of avoiding relegation from the Premier League.

Saivet signed from Bordeaux while Doumbia joined on loan from Roma, but neither made the desired impact at St James' Park. Midfielder Saivet started just two games while forward Doumbia only played 29 minutes as a substitute.

Doumbia's loan move now looks unlikely to be made permanent, even though his agent thinks he could flourish away from Newcastle.

"Doumbia needs trust, he has to play," Jean-Bernard Beytrison told Tuttomercatoweb. "He's a striker who has to be let free, he can't be tied down by tactical aspects.

"He's always had a sensational scoring record throughout his career, purely because he doesn't think about it too much. He's an instinctive footballer, he just naturally scores a crazy amount. Now he needs consistency."

What they said: "He is someone with a very good mentality, who is a tough player and a winner. Those are key qualities you need in the Premier League and we are looking forward to seeing him pulling on the Newcastle United shirt." - Former Newcastle boss Steve McClaren on Henri Saivet.

Radamel Falcao (Chelsea)

After a disappointing season with Manchester United, it was hoped that a move to Chelsea could help Falcao rediscover his best form.

Chelsea defender John Terry talked up the Colombian after he joined and said he could be a big player for the club.

"Now I have seen him first hand in training on a daily basis and his finishing is unbelievable. I think if he gets a run in the side he can reproduce his form of the past," he said. "His career has been all about goals and scoring goals on the big occasion so I'm hoping that is what he brings to the side.  He wants to succeed and no doubt that is why he has come to us."

But, in a season when they could have done with the Falcao of old, the Colombian failed to deliver.

He scored just once in an injury-hit campaign, missed out on selection for Colombia's Copa America squad and now looks set to head back to Monaco from his loan spell.

What they said: "I just feel it's a new opportunity for him. He's the kind of player who's proved people wrong all of his career. We believe he can be very important for us." - Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on Radamel Falcao.
