Former Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar is training with Sunderland, according to Sky Sources.

Pienaar, 34, could be David Moyes' first signing after being released by Everton earlier this summer.

The South African midfielder fell out of favour at Goodison Park last season, where he only featured six times under Roberto Martinez.

Moyes managed Pienaar from 2007 to 2011 at Everton, and the Scotsman, who has also handed a trial to former Aston Villa midfielder Charles N'Zogbia, has stated the importance of adding new players to the Sunderland squad ahead of the forthcoming season.

Marouane Fellaini and Adnan Januzaj have also been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light, which would see them re-unite with their former boss.

Moyes admitted on Monday that while a move for the pair may be unlikely, he would love to have players of their calibre at Sunderland.

Moyes outlines his plans for the rest of the transfer window and promises the fans new signings.

"If anyone of those players want to join us, I would be happy to have them because they are excellent players," he said. "We are interested, but I am sure a host of other clubs are too."
