Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink admits his side were beaten by the better team in their 2-0 home defeat to Brentford

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has admitted QPR were second best after they were beaten 2-0 by Brentford on Friday night.

Josh Clarke and Romaine Sawyers struck either side of half-time as the Bees claimed the bragging rights in the west London derby at Loftus Road.

"We were second best today," Hasselbaink said. "It is very disappointing after the Bristol City game here where we had so much good play and we wanted to kick on from that.

Reaction and analysis from Dean Smith after Brentford's first win over QPR at Loftus Road in 52 years

"But we made them look a very good side and we couldn't get our game going, they closed us down very well and it's hard to take."

There were boos from the home support at half time and full time at Loftus Road and Hasselbaink admitted he could understand their frustration.

"Supporters are going to respond how they want to," Hasselbaink said. "They want to win games and they feel that we need to win more, and so do we. I understand their frustration but that won't help the players.

"What we need to look at is why we win more away from home than at home, not that I'm using that as an excuse.

"Everyone that knows me knows I'm a fighter. We'll fight, stick together and look each other in the eye and work.

"Nevertheless, I expected it to be a lot better today. At least to have a good performance and the performance is what lets me down, not the result."

Victorious boss Dean Smith, meanwhile, was delighted with his side's display as they claimed a first win in five.

"I thought we were outstanding first half, on the ball and off the ball," Smith said. "In the second half at times we needed to defend our box and we did that too.

"It wasn't just the victory [but I'm delighted] with the performance tonight."

Smith also reserved special praise for Sawyers, who struck his first goal for the Bees as well as putting in an excellent display.

"I'm really pleased for him," Smith added. "Last week he got jeered off but I think that was more to do with the scoreline than Romaine and he's become an instant hit tonight by scoring against our local rivals.

"You saw from his celebration how much it means to him."
