Claude Puel urges Southampton to forget about Inter Milan, focus on Hull

Claude Puel has urged his Southampton players to be calm against Inter Milan

Claude Puel has warned his Southampton players to forget about their Europa League heroics against Inter Milan in midweek and concentrate on beating Hull City on Sunday.

The Saints battled back from a goal down to win 2-1 at St Mary's on Thursday and put themselves in with an excellent chance of progressing from Group K into the knockout stages.

A Virgil van Dijk equaliser and an own goal from Inter defender Yuto Nagatomo capped a memorable night for the hosts, but Puel wants his side to now put the euphoria of Thursday's night win firmly behind them ahead of their trip to the KCOM Stadium.

"One day after it's always difficult, of course, with a short night, but it's important now to forget this game against Inter Milan, and now it's another competition and an important game for us against Hull City," Puel said.

"Just two days after the Internazionale game, it's important to make a good answer and keep a good concentration on this game, because in the Premier League we need points. It's important to make a very good result away from home."

Southampton currently sit ninth in the Premier League table with 13 points from 10 games but Puel is keen to see his side climb the table after a 2-0 defeat at home to Chelsea in their last Premier League game.

"Of course, it will be important to have a good result just before the international break for the mind and the confidence, and also because we don't have a lot of points in the Premier League," he said.

"It's important after we lost the last game, against Chelsea at home, to have a good reaction, a good attitude for this game, because it's important to be in the top half of the Premier League."

Striker Shane Long, midfielder Jake Hesketh and defenders Cedric Soares, Jeremy Pied and Matt Targett all missed the match against Inter due to injury, and Puel said none of them would be available for the weekend.

"I don't think we will see the squad change for this week, because all the injured players are still unavailable," Puel said.

"After the game last night, everyone was happy with the result. Now we have to stay calm and show good concentration."
