Newcastle have confirmed Dwight Gayle suffered a hamstring injury during Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Magpies' boss Rafa Benitez was forced into an early change when top-scorer Gayle hobbled off the field after 29 minutes, struggling with what appeared to be the recurrence of a hamstring injury that sidelined him earlier this year.

But after the game, Benitez stressed the injury was not a return of the previous problem and the club have now confirmed the 27-year-old is undergoing tests to determine the seriousness on a hamstring strain.

A statement on the club's website read: "Newcastle United can confirm that Dwight Gayle sustained a hamstring strain in his right leg during United's 2-1 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

"Dwight is currently undergoing tests to determine the severity of his injury so it is not yet known how long the player may be out injured."

Newcastle missed out on moving to the Championship summit with defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, who moved into the play-off spots with victory over Benitez's men.

Tom Lees opened the scoring shortly before the hour-mark before Steven Fletcher added a second nine minutes later to fuel the Owls' push towards the play-offs and prevent Newcastle from moving to top.
