Blackpool boss Gary Bowyer praised his player's determination and guts as they overcame Exeter 2-1 in the Sky Bet League Two play-off final.

Blackpool boss Gary Bowyer admits he needs to strengthen his side after their "amazing achievement" in securing promotion to Sky Bet League One with a 2-1 win over Exeter.

Brad Potts struck first to put the Tangerines ahead in the Sky Bet League Two play-off final before they were pegged back by David Wheeler.

But Mark Cullen struck the winner in the second half for the Tangerines, as they return to the third tier at the first time of asking.

"It's an amazing achievement when you consider [what the club was like] when we first came in and what has happened in the last couple of years," said Bowyer. "Enormous credit must go to the players and staff for the amount of hard work that has gone into this.

"It's unbelievable really and an amazing feeling that'll stay with the players for a long, long time. The flexibility and adaptability they've shown in the last three months when people have tried to have cheap shots at us, they've not been affected by it and just concentrated on the games, and they've done the same again today.

"Now our immediate objective is to enjoy this moment and tonight, then we'll set about the business that needs to be taken care of to compete in League One. Some of our players can compete there but we do need to strengthen, I'm under no illusion of that."

Blackpool took more than 30,000 fans to both their Championship play-off finals at Wembley in 2010 and 2012, but an ongoing dispute against the owners meant significantly fewer Tangerines supporters were in attendance on Sunday.

Man of the match Brad Potts was 'over the moon' after scoring and then setting up the winner in Blackpool's play-off triumph over Exeter.

Bowyer admitted it was disappointing to have such a small crowd, but said he won't waste time worrying about issues he has no control over and will only concentrate on those that he can.

"It's a shame as it would have been great to have more here, but the ones who were here made a hell of a noise, like they have all season," he said.

"I've said from the start we can't control it, I'm used to that experience from Blackburn so I've concentrated on what I can, which is the football - the day-to-day coaching and training and the performances on the pitch.

"We try not to spend time thinking about things we have no control over. I'll be going to the chairman for other reasons to say we need new players and a transfer budget, that's my criteria and I won't waste time on things I can't control.

"My main aim was to try and bring stability to the club and build from there. What we've done is more than I've expected, but we've laid the foundations and now we need to push on."
