Clint Dempsey was sent off for Seattle Sounders after the referee used VAR to determine whether he elbowed an opponent

Clint Dempsey was caught by the VAR as Seattle Sounders lost 3-0 to FC Dallas in MLS on Sunday.

The 35-year-old was issued a red card in the 37th minute of the game after a video review by referee Chris Penso.

Dempsey was waiting for a pass in penalty area when Dallas' Jacori Hayes grabbed him from behind. In response, Dempsey swung his right arm back and caught Hayes in the groin, causing him to crumple to the ground.

Penso caught a glimpse of the play while looking over his shoulder and, after looking at the incident again on the pitchside monitor, ejected Dempsey for violent conduct.

Dempsey also clapped in the face of the referee as he walked off.
