Jakob Kuhn paid tribute to his Switzerland side after they beat Portugal 2-0 in his final game in charge.
Kuhn announced before the tournament that he would be standing down and after defeats to Czech Republic and Turkey in their opening two matches, Switzerland had no chance to progress to the quarter-finals.
They nevertheless turned in their finest performance to date as a Hakan Yakin brace sealed victory against a much-changed Portugal side.
Kuhn was thrilled to give the supporters something to smile about and was also pleased that his side enjoyed better fortune.
He said: "It is a huge joy, of course, to win but also some tears of disappointment because I felt we deserved at least a point from our first two games.
"But although we're going home we did the most important thing - making our fans happy."
Worthy send-off
Goalscorer Yakin dedicated the victory to his departing manager, who will be replaced by Ottmar Hitzfeld.
Yakin commented: "I think we owed it to Kobi (Kuhn) and the crowd to get a win and we showed today we could do it. I think it was a worthy send-off for the coach.
"We wanted to achieve something at this European Championship on home soil.
"We're still very disappointed about the two defeats but this has helped us recover a little."
