FA chief calls for referee to abandon match after racist chants
Italian Football Association president Sergio Campana has criticised the referee in the Cagliari-Inter Milan clash for failing to abandon the game after some players were racially abused.
Inter strikers Samuel Eto'o and Mario Balotelli were both victims of racial chants from the terraces in Cagliari as the Nerazzurri ran out 2-1 winners.
Balotelli is, disappointingly, no stranger to such antics after he was racially abused in a game at Juventus last season.
The FA ordered the Old Lady to play a match behind closed doors as a result but the Italian football governing body have since brought in new laws to try and bring an end to racism in Serie A.
Referees have been ordered to abandon games should any players receive racial taunting but the official in charge of Sunday's match failed to apply the new laws.
"Faced with this type of behaviour, referees should suspend the match, something which did not happen in Cagliari," Campana said.
"In these cases the rules are very clear. Suspension of matches are part of the rules and rules have to be respected.
"I believe such a gesture (suspending a match) would be very constructive on the referee's part and would set an important precedent."
