Glenn Loovens will miss Celtic's game against Motherwell on Saturday after losing his appeal against a one-match ban for his clash with Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu last season.
Hoops defender Loovens was handed a suspension by the Scottish Football Association's disciplinary committee following a review of video footage.
The 25-year-old Holland international appeared to flick a boot at Edu in an incident which saw him handed a ban and 12 points added to his 2008-09 disciplinary total for "misconduct of a significantly serious nature".
His appeal against the decision has been dismissed and he will now miss this weekend's SPL game against Motherwell.
Loovens' case has exposed serious flaws in the SFA's disciplinary process. Despite his clash with Edu taking place more than five months ago, he was not found guilty until the disciplinary committee met on 7th August.
His appeal freed him to play in injury-hit Celtic's opening SPL game of the season at Aberdeen and it has taken the SFA more than two months to reconvene on the matter.
Celtic boss Tony Mowbray said: "The bottom line is it's been dealt with and if the appeal panel say he has to miss a game then he has to miss a game.
"We accept that and move on."
Loovens had been struggling with a calf problem and was a doubt for Saturday's game in any case.
But Mowbray said: "He probably would have been in contention this weekend.
"We will rest him and make sure his calf is ready for next week."
