Bust-up with van Gaal reaches new level

Bayern Munich manager Louis van Gaal has left striker Luca Toni out of the squad to face Hannover. The Italian forward will not play in Sunday's Bundesliga tie after a series of fall-outs with the Bayern boss, and is expected by many to leave the German side when the transfer window opens in January. Toni, 32, was fined €25,000 on Thursday for going public in his feud with Van Gaal, describing his relationship with the Dutch tactician as 'as good as over'. Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness says the Italian can rectify the situation if he apologises to his manager, but Van Gaal has refused to pick him for the weekend trip to Hannover. "I have problems with players who do not conform to the normal requirements of a player of Bayern Munich, and that is Toni," he said. "You can ask me every week, but I am not going to answer anymore." Toni is thought to want a return to his homeland Italy in the run up to next year's World Cup in South Africa. Serie A sides Roma and Napoli and Spanish outfit Valencia are among the clubs rumoured to be tracking his progress.
