Brown calm over City threat

Wes Brown insists the emergence of Man City as a force will not distract Man Utd's quest for glory.

Red Devils defender is not perturbed by rivals' new-found wealth

Wes Brown believes the emergence of Manchester City as a Premier League force will not distract Manchester United's quest for glory. The Red Devils have had to deal with the rise to prominence of Chelsea under Roman Abramovich in recent years as Jose Mourinho guided them to two successive Premier League crowns in 2005 and 2006. United responded to the challenge and have gone on to win the last three league titles, and Brown insists City's new-found wealth is just another obstacle to try and overcome. The defender has impressed since filling in for the injured Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans alongside Nemanja Vidic this term and now has a two-legged Carling Cup semi-final with Mark Hughes' men in January to look forward to. "You are aware of shifts in power but we have always been up there, which is a good achievement," the 30-year-old said. "We set out to challenge for the title at the start of every season and to continue doing that we have to keep working hard. "City have got a lot of money to spend and have therefore bought good players and will probably continue to do so. "That means they are going to be challenging - they have to be with the players they have. "We have just got to keep doing what we are doing, continue improving and hopefully we can keep on doing as well as we have over the last few years."
